Rockets crack poll; lose to Henderson

Crittenden County moved into the region’s Top 10 list this week for the first time this season despite losing its last three games.

The Rockets (6-6) went into their Christmas holiday schedule on a four-game winning streak – the likely impetus for breaking in to the area media poll’s Top 10 – but lost twice in a holiday tournament at Dover late last week and fell to Henderson County, ranked No. 4 in the region, on Monday at Rocket Area.

Junior point guard Gabe Mott scored 18 of his game-high 26 points in the second half against Henderson.

The Colonels led by 15 at halftime.

Half of Mott’s second-half points came at the foul line.

Preston Turley added 18 for CCHS and Erik O’Leary had 15.

Henderson (7-5) scored 10 three-pointers in the game.

The Rockets will be back in action later this week – Thursday against McCracken County at Mustang Madness and Friday night at home against Lyon County in a varsity Fifth District doubleheader.

Junior Preston Turley scored a dozen points during the run and Livingston wilted amid a furious rally that put the Rockets comfortably ahead.

Double Dose of Victory for CCHS hoopsters

GIRLS BEAT TILGHMAN
Crittenden County’s girls are on a three-game roll and they’re starting to regain some respect around the region – and beyond – particularly with poll-makers.

The Rocket girls (4-3) won at home Tuesday over Paducah Tilghman (3-4). It was the Lady Tornado’s first loss to a Kentucky team this season.

Crittenden weathered some heavy ball pressure, including a regular double-team, on its point guard, Taylor Guess, and got some big offense late from juniors Nahla Woodward and Chandler Moss to win 52-51 in a bruiser.

Freshman guard Natalie Boone carried the team offensively early, scoring nine in the first half, until the Rocket girls adapted to …. See the rest of this article in this week’s printed edition of The Crittenden Press.

ROCKETS PICKING UP STEAM
Winless Livingston Central will visit Rocket Arena on Friday just as the Rocket basketball team is starting to create some semblance of an identity.

Junior forward Preston Turley is starting to heat up despite losing a toenail in Saturday’s loss at University Heights. Crittenden led by a point at the half at UHA but lost the lead and Turley’s toenail in the second half.

Turley scored 34 Monday at home in a win over Hardin County, Ill., and Gabe Mott and Eric O’Leary scored 27 apiece on the road to help beat Christian Fellowship Tuesday. The Rockets are getting their offensive mojo working and it’s netting some … See the rest of this article in this week’s printed edition of The Crittenden Press.

HODGE COACHES 700
The Lady Rockets hosted University Heights and beat the Lady Blazers 47-35 at Rocket Arena Saturday.

Crittenden County coach Shannon Hodge, in her 27th season at the helm of the Lady Rockets, coached her 700th game and boosters and parents held a reception to mark the occasion. She was presented with a wooden figurine made from the old gym floor where she played and coached her first seasons at CCHS.

Junior Jaelyn Duncan had 14 points to lead the team for the first time this season and freshman Taylor Guess scored 13.

BOYS LOSE AT UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS
The Rockets led by a point at halftime Saturday at University Heights, but could not pull off the upset.

The Blazers went on a run in the third period and their star KJ Crump finished with 33 points. He got nine in the fourth period after Rocket freshman guard Preston Morgeson fouled out. Morgeson did a good job guarding Crump in the first three quarters.

Turley scored 23, his best offensive performance of the season and Erik O’Leary and Mott added 14 apiece.

Lady Rockets win, boys fall at Lyon

EDDYVILLE, Ky. – Crittenden County's boys were no match for the Lyons on this night.

The Rockets trailed early and watched the Lyon lead grow to 31 points before they trimmed back in the last few minutes of the contest.

The teams’ two all-region guards – Crittenden’s Gabe Mott and Lyon’s Travis Perry – finished at a draw with 20 points apiece, but Lyon won the battle at the rim.

The Rockets couldn’t get much going around the basket and missed some open jumpers, too. Lyon didn’t shoot particularly well either, but controlled he boards and finished on a number second and third opportunities at the basket.

It was Crittenden’s second district loss of the season after falling to Trigg a week earlier. Lyon improves to 2-0 in the district.

GUESS SCORES 34 FOR GIRLS
The Lady Rockets had a must-win situation Friday at Lyon County despite being only the second week of the season, and they pulled it off.

Crittenden opened up a game that started close with a big run in the second period which started when freshman point guard Taylor Guess sank a three to pull CCHS ahead 12-9. The Rocket girls never trailed after that point.

Guess finished with a career-best 34 points. She had scored 31 last Saturday at Ballard and is averaging well over 20 points per game at this point.

Towel thrown in at right time

Some fair-weather Rocket basketball fans may have been ready to throw in the towel after last week’s disappointing Fifth District loss to Trigg County, but Crittenden County coach Denis Hodge hung onto it and hurled the towel at a key juncture four days later to ignite a spark, and a great big shot.

Crittenden County lost 61-43 Friday to Fifth District foe Trigg County at Rocket Arena, but turned the tables on Caldwell County Tuesday at the same venue, beating the Tigers 65-62 in a thriller. It was the first Rocket win over Caldwell since a double-overtime victory in 2014.

Freshman Preston Morgeson touched in a three-pointer with four seconds to play Tuesday, breaking a tie game. Then he picked off Caldwell’s inbounds pass, preventing any sort of a Tiger miracle.

Guess smokin' in cool start for girls

After four games this season freshman point guard Taylor Guess is averaging over 20 points a game, but Crittenden County's girls basketball team is 1-3 out of the chute with a key Fifth District matchup on Friday at Lyon County.

Guess, who's been a varsity player since seventh grade, netted a career high 31 points at Ballard Memorial on Saturday in CCHS's only win of the young season.

On Tuesday at Rocket Arena, the Lady Rockets had 32 turnovers and 35 points. The outcome was predictable as Caldwell County routed Crittenden 64-35.

Basketball Openers: A tale of two road trips

Rockets win going away at Ballard Memorial
Rocket basketball coach Denis Hodge knew it would take his basketball team a bit to get its legs and find its touch. He probably didn’t imagine it would take just three quarters.

Crittenden County opened its season Tuesday at Ballard Memorial and used some big runs to overtake the hosts 71-45, but it wasn’t that lopsided until late.

The Rockets had runs of 9-0 and 16-3 in the first half to lead by almost a dozen, 31-21, at the break.

With three minutes to go in the third period, the Rockets were ahead 35-22. From there, Crittenden punched on the afterburners and exploded for almost 40 points in the final 12 minutes to win going away in its opener. Senior Erik O’Leary scored 20 to lead the way.

The Rockets will be at home on Friday for a varsity doubleheader against Fifth District opponent Trigg County.

Lady Rockets run out of juice in 4th
After three quarters, Crittenden County was dead even with Union County in both teams’ opening basketball game Tuesday at Morganfield.

However, Union County junior guard Raelle Beaven scored 10 of her 11 points in the final period to pace a 19-8 final run that held off Crittenden County.

The Lady Rockets were led by freshman guard Taylor Guess’s 17 points. She had one field goal in the fourth period and that was the only basket Crittenden managed for the entire period. The rest of its points in the last quarter came at the foul line, and that just wasn’t enough.

Junior Nahla Woodward struggled with foul trouble in the game and wasn’t too much help on offense. She finished with five points. Jaelyn Duncan had 11 for Crittenden.

Crittenden County fans attending Tuesday night's girls' basketball game at Union County may bring a stuffed animal for Christmas, and get in free to the game.

Union County is collecting stuffed animals to take to the children's hospital in Evansville.

So your donation of a stuffed critter will help make Christmas a little brighter for a hospitalized child and you don't have to buy a ticket to the Lady Rockets vs Lady Braves ball JV and Varsity ballgames.
