Eighth-grader Morgeson upping offensive game

Eighth-grader Preston Morgeson scored a career high 10 points and two other Rockets were in double figures, but Crittenden County lost 86-60 after a slow start Saturday against Sycamore, Tenn., at the Stewart County Holiday Tournament in Dover, Tenn.

The Rockets got 15 points from sophomore Gabe Mott and 11 from from sophomore Preston Turley.

Morgeson, who's been getting more and more playing time at guard, saw action in all four quarters against the War Eagles (10-3).

Crittenden (4-9) started slowly, falling behind by double digits in the first period and was never able to keep pace. The Rockets were 0-2 in the two-day Stewart County event.

The Rockets will be back in action Friday at Lyon County for a Fifth District matchup. Lyon is 9-6 overall after going 3-3 in two holiday tournaments.

DOVER, Tenn. – Junior Jayden Carlson's 3-pointer was Crittenden's only basket of the final period and Cheatham County turned what was a three-point game after three quarters into a rout.

The Cubs (4-8) outscored Crittenden 18-3 in the final period to beat the Rockets 57-39 in the opening game of a holiday basketball event at Stewart County in Dover, Tenn. 

Erik O'Leary scored 11 of his game-high 13 points in the second period. No other Rocket scored in double figures. Senior Sawyer Towery and sophomore Tyler Boone did not play because of injuries. Towery is out with a groin injury and Boone with a knee injury.

Crittenden (4-8) will play Sycamore, Tenn. (9-3) today at noon to close out its Christmas holiday tournament schedule. The Rockets are back to Fifth District action Friday at Lyon County.

Rockets in Tennessee for post-Christmas hoops

Crittenden County will return to the floor for post-Christmas basketball action tonight against Cheatham County, Tenn., in the Stewart County, Tenn., Holiday Tournament at Dover, Tenn.

Friday's 4:30pm opponent, Cheatham County, is located in Ashland City, Tenn., about 20 miles northwest of Nashville. The Cubs are 3-8 this season and ranked 89th in the state's Division I Class 2A.

On Saturday, the Rockets will play Sycamore, another 2A school just north of Nashville. The War Eagles have beaten Cheatham County by three points already this season. The two play together in the same 9th District in middle Tennessee’s Region 5. Sycamore is 3-0 in district play this year and 8-3 overall. The War Eagles are ranked 42nd in the state in their division. Saturday's game begins at noon.

The Rockets played well for the most part at last week's Hancock County Christmas Tournament where they beat Eminence and Williamston to go 2-1 in the holiday event. The Rockets lost to Whitesville Trinity.

Gabe Mott continues to play well for the Rockets. The sophomore point guard scored 55 points in three games at Hancock County and currently leads the Rockets with an 18.8 scoring average. He is the only Rocket averaging in double figures. Sophomore Preston Turley and senior Sawyer Towery are scoring just over nine points apiece.

Rockets put up 90 against Eminence

Crittenden County's basketball team put up 90 points in a 30-point victory over Eminence in the opening round of the Hancock County Aleris Christmas Tournament.

It was the most points CCHS has scored in a single game since the Rockets beat the now defunct Providence Bulldogs 96-40 on Feb. 20, 2007.

Sophomore point guard Gabe Mott continues to lead the team offensively. He poured in 24 against Eminence.

The Rockets, now 3-6, play Whitesville Trinity (6-3) at 6pm today in the winner's bracket semifinal at Hawesville.

The championship game is at at 8pm Saturday. If Crittenden falls into the loser's bracket on Saturday the boys will play at 6pm.
