Lady Rockets take down Piperless Lyon

EDDYVILLE, Ky. — Crittenden County turned defensive pressure into late separation Friday night, pulling away from Lyon County for a 49-40 win in a matchup between the Second Region’s top two girls teams.

Lyon County played without junior Piper Cotham, last year’s regional player of the year, who is recovering from a broken nose. Trinity Taylor ran the point in her absence, with Maddie Perry taking on an expanded role, as the Lady Lyons relied primarily on a zone defense.

Lyon (17-5) controlled much of the first half and led at the break as Crittenden struggled offensively, missing shots and finding few driving lanes against the zone. The Lady Rockets trailed at halftime but found momentum after the break as their defensive intensity increased.

Crittenden’s press began to disrupt Lyon’s rhythm in the third quarter. Elliot Evans ignited the shift with two steals that led directly to baskets and gave Crittenden (15-4) its first lead of the second half. The Rockets closed the period on a surge to take a 40-36 lead.

Defense decided the fourth quarter as the Lady Rockets controlled the tempo down the stretch to seal the nine-point win.

Jordyn Hodge led Crittenden with 17 points, while Evans scored 14 and Anna Boone added eight.

Taylor led Lyon County with 22 points, including three three-pointers. Perry finished with seven points.

After the win, Crittenden can now complete sweep of the regular-season district schedule with a win Tuesday at Trigg County.
