Lady Rockets lose 4th straight at BG tournament

Lady Rockets Andrea Federico and Elliot Evans
work to guard Central Hardin's Juliana Stith.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Crittenden County’s Christmas curse reached a holiday break low over the weekend at Bowling Green when CCHS slogged through a four-game losing skid finished off by a 58-50 loss to Central Hardin. Crittenden finished last place at the eight-team South Warren Holiday Bash.

It wasn’t what most observers had expected after the Lady Rockets opened the season 5-2 and sleighed into the holidays on a roll after beating Fifth District rival Lyon County.

Since beating the Lyons on Dec. 15, CCHS has lost five of its last six, all on the road at neutral holiday tournament sites.

As has consistently been the case this season, the Lady Rockets shot in the lower 30 percent range in the loss to Central Hardin (4-10). Crittenden went five minutes in the last quarter without a bucket and shot just 22 percent in that period.

The Rocket girls were hot handed out of the chute though, and led for a moment in the opening period, before falling behind by double figures before halftime. They never got much closer.

Lady Bruins junior point guard Juliana Stith, who averages 20 points, was unstoppable although CCHS tried various options to defend her. She handled the ball, ran the offense and poured in a game-high 28 points. CCHS sophomore Anna Boone had 22 and classmate Elliot Evans added 13.

The Lady Rockets, now 6-7 on the season, will play again on Thursday at Webster County.

Lady Rockets winless so far at BG

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Oh! for Three at Bowling Green.

The ring of that squeals like an unpleasant odor for Crittenden County girls’ skipper Shannon Hodge, who is in search of her 400th win. Of course that personal mark is far from her mind as Hodge’s young basketball team – that came out of the chute with six wins in its first nine games – now flirts with mediocrity at .500.

A berth in the seventh-place game in the eight-team BankOne Holiday Bash wasn’t what the coach had expected going into it with a 6-3 worksheet, and two of the first three opponents at South Warren’s holiday hitch hadn’t won more than four games combined.

While the CCHS girls wanted desperately to grant their coach a milestone victory on Friday, it left town on Mr. Peabody’s coal train.

Of course that reference is the famous song by the late John Prine about Muhlenberg County, the team that dispatched CCHS 62-57 in the last pool play game of the tournament.

Crittenden will play Central Hardin – also winless in the holiday event – at 11 a.m., Saturday.

Sophomore Anna Boone continues to score well for the Lady Rockets, netting a career-high 34 against Muhlenberg as her team shot a mere 32 percent from the floor.

The Lady Mustangs (3-8) tried several times to let CCHS get back into the game down the stretch, scoring just two baskets and turning the ball over six times in the last three and a half minutes.

Muhlenberg Co. 13 30 49 62

Lady Rockets lose lead and game in 4th

Anna Boone scored 27 points against Glasgow
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Inconsistent shooting continued to trouble the Lady Rockets in their second game at the FirstBank Holiday Bash in Bowling Green. Crittenden County built a double-digit lead early in the second half, but lost 53-48 as the game slipped away in the final three minutes.

Foul trouble in the post and second-chance baskets by the opposition hurt CCHS’s chance to giving coach Shannon Hodge her 400th career win. Instead, the Crittenden girls watched their record fall to 6-5 on the season while the Scotties won for just the third time in a dozen games.

Anna Boone was the game’s top scorer with 27 points, but no other Lady Rocket had more than eight while Glasgow put three girls in double figures. Boone is averaging 20 points a game, but none of her teammates is scoring in double figures.

Crittenden led by four with about six minutes to play. Two straight CCHS turnovers against the pressing Scotties let Glasgow tie the game at the 3:43 mark. CCHS was outscored 11-6 down the stretch.

Crittenden plays Muhlenberg County at 6pm Friday then there will be a seeded consolation game for them on Saturday.

Rockets pull out of Owensboro holiday action

Crittenden County’s boys’ basketball team has pulled out of the Southwire Holiday Classic in Owensboro this weekend due to team illness and injuries that had whittled the roster down to just five players, according to CCHS coach Matt Fraliex.

The Rockets were already without leading scorer Travis Champion, who suffered an ACL injury in the season’s second game. He is expected to return to the lineup as early as next week.

Forward Gabe Keller broke his hand in a non-basketball accident over the holidays and other issues had left three more players unavailable for action.

The Rockets are scheduled to play Thursday at Fort Campbell.

Crittenden was supposed to have played Hancock and McLean counties in the Owensboro event.

South Oldham overpowers Lady Rockets

Anna Boone is fouled during the
girls loss to South Oldham.
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Down by 20 in the first half, Crittenden County scratched its way back to within five points against South Oldham Thursday before losing big 82-57 in the FirstBank Holiday Bash at South Warren High School.

With a methodical two-headed offense, the Lady Dragons (8-2) outplayed Crittenden County (6-4) most of the way, but the Lady Rockets showed periods of life, particularly on a 16-8 run that brought them back into contention halfway through the third quarter.

Sophomore Anna Boone scored 20 points to lead CCHS, and Oldham had two strong offensive threats, who finished with 27 and 24 points.

South Oldham was an Eighth Region semifinalist a year ago with a 19-9 record and returned the heart of the lineup.

Crittenden County plays Glasgow at 1:30pm and Muhlenberg County at 6pm on Friday.

The Rockets were 1-2 at the St. Mary event.
Pictured is senior Turner Sharp (11).
PADUCAH, Ky. – Crittenden County, still without leading scorer Travis Champion, fell behind by double digits in the first half and made only one significant run late in the third against Second Region foe Dawson Springs in the third-place game of the St. Mary Christmas Tournament Friday.

CCHS lost 42-34 as senior Jaxon Hatfield led the Rockets with 10 points. He was the only player in double figures for CCHS.

Dawson Springs, now 7-3, has beaten Crittenden three straight times. Before the Panthers’ win streak against CCHS, the Rocket had beaten Dawson 18 in a row dating back to 2011.

Crittenden County is now 1-8 on the season and will play next week in the Owensboro Southwire Holiday Classic. The Rockets will play McLean County (10-2) and Hancock County (4-7)  in the holiday event.

Champion, who tore his ACL in the second game of the season, is expected to return to the lineup at Owensboro. Doctors have told the senior that he can brace the knee and play so long he can bear any pain that might go along with it.

Lady Rockets beat Logan in overtime

Jordyn Hodge and Logan County's Kyla
Bilyeu were players of the game.
PRINCETON, Ky. – Lady Rocket sophomore Anna Boone and eighth-grader Jordyn Hodge led a fourth-quarter comeback Friday that took Logan County into overtime where Crittenden County prevailed 60-57 in a holiday basketball event at Caldwell County.

Crittenden trailed most of regulation but took a lead with two minutes in regulation on a Hodge three-pointer. Boone had scored six straight points to pull CCHS close after falling behind by double digits.

Hodge scored five points in the overtime and sophomore Bristyn Rushing had tie other four.

Crittenden’s defense was good much of the way, but turnovers and periodic poor rebounding were chronic issues that the Lady Rockets overcame late. Logan County (6-3) featured 5-foot-11 center Kyla Bilyeu, who posed a challenge for CCHS inside.

Boone scored a game-high 23 points and Bilyeu had 20. Hodge scored 18 for CCHS, including five threes. She was chosen Player of the Game.

CCHS improved to 6-3 and 31-year head coach Shannon Hodge pulled to wishing one victory of her 400th win. Fewer than 40 Kentucky high school girls’ basketball coaches have won more than 400.

The Lady Rockets will be back in action Dec. 28 at he FirstBank Holiday Bash at South Warren in Bowling Green. South Oldham is 7-2 and will be the first of four games CCHS will play there, including contests against Glasgow and Muhlenberg County.

Lady Rockets fall in final seconds

PRINCETON, Ky. – A 31-point performance by sophomore Anna Boone wasn’t enough for the Lady Rockets in a 61-59 loss to Rowan County Thursday.

The Lady Rockets and Rowen County played the first game of the two-day Hoops Classic at Caldwell County High School.

Behind Boone, sophomore center Bristyn Rushing added 14 points. Boone’s effort earned her player of the game honors.

The Lady Rockets were down six at the half and tied at 41 apiece at the end of the third quarter then led by five points for a time.

The teams were tied with 8 seconds on the clock when a Lady Rocket foul in the backcourt sent Rowan County’s leading scorer, eighth grader Kelbie Ford, to the line for the two-point win.

Rockets get first win of season

PADUCAH, Ky. – Sophomore Bryson Walker scored 23 points Wednesday to lift Crittenden County to its first victory in seven games to the start the season.

The Rockets beat Ballard Memorial (2-5) in the opening round of the St. Mary Christmas Tournament. The Bombers were defending tournament champs.

Crittenden will play Carlisle County (4-2) in the winner's bracket at 7pm Thursday.

The win comes on the heals of coach Matt Fraliex announcement that senior Travis Champion will be able to return to the lineup soon. Champion, one of Rocket basketball's all-time best scorers, has been diagnosed with a torn ACL. However, doctors say he can brace the knee and play. He was hurt in the second game of the season at Livingston Central. Champion did not play against Ballard Memorial and will not likely play in other St. Mary Tournament games this week. He's projected to return the court next week when CCHS plays in a holiday tournament at Owensboro.

CCHS girls steal thunder in district DH

Bryson Walker during Friday's game.
MARION, Ky. – One of the largest crowds to ever see a regular-season district doubleheader was on hand Friday night at Rocket Arena, ostensibly to see UK commit Travis Perry and his No. 1 ranked Lyons, but the Lady Rockets stole much of the evening’s thunder.

Crittenden County’s girls came back from a 16-point third-quarter deficit to beat Lyon County 63-56 in a pivotal Fifth District matchup. Lyons boys, led by future Wildcat Travis Perry’s 35 points, beat the Rockets 97-38.

Crittenden County boys’ coach Matt Fraliex said his team played well despite the lopsided loss against the one of the premier teams in Kentucky. Longtime Lady Rocket skipper Shannon Hodge was elated with her team’s second-half effort.

Behind freshman guard Piper Cotham’s 17 first-half points, Lyon’s girls led by 10 at the break and they went on a 6-0 run to start the third period to lead 39-23. From there, CCHS closed the door on Cotham and pinned Lyon down with a frustrating pressing defense that turned the tide in the fourth period.

Lady Rocket sophomore Elliot Evans guards
Lyon's Piper Cotham in the 2nd half.

Sophomore Anna Boone led Crittenden with 24 points and eight rebounds. She scored 17 in the second half. Classmate Elliot Evans scored 17 for CCHS and the bench provided 15 points, mostly from freshman backup center Morgan Stewart. Stewart played much of the last half when starting center Bristyn Rushing left the game with an illness. Stewart finished with a career-high 11 points and four rebounds.

Crittenden has now beaten Lyon five in a row and 14 of the last 15. The Lady Rockets improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in district play. Meanwhile, Lyon fell to 2-1 in the league and 4-3 overall.

Perry, whose Lyons feature at least two other college-bound players, didn’t disappoint the crowd that turned out for the show. He scored eight of Lyon’s 14 threes and didn’t play much in the final period during a running clock.

Perry, whose parents both graduated from Crittenden County High School, has a large extended family in this community.

Crittenden was slow out of the chute, trailing 22-0 in the first period, but coach Fraliex said his boys maintained their composure and played with great effort. Senior Turner Sharp erased the early goose egg with a three-pointer at the 2:38 mark of the first period, and CCHS trailed 62-22 at the half.

Rocket center Jonah Reddick had 10 points playing against his brother Jack Reddick, a Lyon County guard. Jack finished with 13 for Lyon.

More than 550 tickets were sold for the game, which does not include more than 100 season ticket holders. With around 750 total attendance, school officials say it was perhaps the largest regular-season crowd ever at Rocket Arena.

Crittenden’s boys remain winless six games this season while Lyon improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. CCHS is 0-3 in district games.

Braves sweep CCHS in boy, girl doubleheader

Crittenden fell behind by 14 after almost three quarters Tuesday at Morganfield, but bounced back to tie Union County down the stretch before losing 54-45.

Lady Braves senior Lillian Goodloe nailed seven threes and Union outshot CCHS at the foul to make up the difference. Anna Boone was the only Rocket girl in double figures as Crittenden shot very poorly from the floor and fell to 4-2 on the season.

The Rocket boys fell behind early and never made it close Tuesday at Union County as the CCHS dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 66-46 loss.

Crittenden continues to limp along without its leading scorer Travis Champion, who was hurt a week and a half ago in the game at Livingston Central. He's scheduled for an MRI on his knee and it's unclear when he might return to the court.

Senior Turner Sharp led CCHS with 15 points and sophomore Bryson Walker scored a dozen at Union County.

CCHS beats Mayfield to go 4-1 on season

Anna Boone was named Player of the Game
PADUCAH, Ky. – Crittenden County used strong defense and improved shooting to turn back Mayfield 50-37 in the McCracken County Holiday Hoopla Saturday.

Anna Boone was named Player of the Game after scoring 18 points.

Boone fueled a second-quarter run that saw the Lady Rockets take command of the tempo and scoreboard after some cool shooting in the beginning. The sophomore guard poured in eight points during an 11-2 run that gave CCHS a double-digit lead at halftime.

Foul trouble kept Lady Rocket center Bristyn Rushing and guard Elliot Evans on the bench for a periods during the game. However, Crittenden was able to maintain its lead most of the second half. Mayfield cut it to four at one point in the fourth period, but Crittenden stepped on the accelerator down the stretch to win going away.

Evans and Jordyn Hodge scored 10 apiece for CCHS, which improved to 4-1 on the season.

Mayfield (2-1) was ranked No. 5 in a First Region preseason poll while CCHS was No. 7 in the Second Region.

Crittenden splits district doubleheader with Trigg

MARION, Ky. – Despite a difficult night shooting the ball, Crittenden County beat Trigg County 56-31 Friday to even its record to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in Fifth District play.

Six first-period Crittenden turnovers allowed the Lady Wildcats (2-2) to stay close for a time. Trigg was within two points with 4:20 to go in the first half, but CCHS began to pull way just before intermission and led 39-25 at the break.

Sophomore Elliot Evans led the Rocket girls with 15 points and classmate Anna Boone had 14 despite some foul trouble that kept her off the floor for a good part of the second period.

BOYS FALL BEHIND LATE

Close for more than three quarters, Trigg County pulled away late against Crittenden County when the game sped up and the Wildcats won going away 66-50.

Playing without leading scorer Travis Champion – who remains out with a knee injury – the Rockets used a zone defense to befuddle Trigg much of the way. Crittenden led by three, 29-26, with six minutes to go in the third following two buckets by senior Turner Sharp.

From there, the Wildcats turned up the pace and pulled ahead late in the third and then went up by nine in the fourth period on a Jayden Vaughn jump shot from the wing. It was the largest lead for either team to that point.

Without Champion, Crittenden was unable to muster enough offense down the stretch to close the gap and Trigg won for the first time in four games. Meanwhile, the Rockets fell for the fourth straight time this season.

Sophomore Bryson Walker led Crittenden with 20 points. He was the only Rocket in double figures.

Crittenden had defeated Trigg nine of the previous 13 meetings.

CCHS swept at Livingston for first time since 2018

Anna Boone scored a team-high 18 points.
SMITHLAND, Ky. – Not since January of 2018 had Crittenden County been swept at Smithland, but on Friday the Lady Rockets and Rockets were both taken to the mat in a Fifth District doubleheader at Livingston Central.

The Rocket girls took Livingston to overtime before bowing 52-49 as the Lady Cardinals snapped a 17-game losing streak against CCHS.

Livingston missed 9 of its 12 foul shots in the overtime, but still managed to hang on to win as the Lady Rocket offense sputtered down the stretch and turned the ball over far too many times.

“We had a chance to win the game in regulation,” Crittenden coach Shannon Hodge said. “Our offense was just stagnant and we were very insecure with the ball.”

Anna Boone, who fouled out in overtime, led the Lady Rockets with 18 points and eighth-grader Jordyn Hodge came off the bench to score a dozen. Otherwise, there wasn’t too much cooking on that end of the floor. Meanwhile, Livingston junior Victoria Joiner scored a game-high 20.

CCHS led by five at the half and by four early in the fourth period.

Crittenden (1-1) gets back to action at Caldwell County Tuesday. Livingston improved to 1-1 on the season.

Bryson Walker scored a team-high 27 for CCHS.

The boys also jumped out to a lead then stumbled in the second half. Their unraveling actually began late in the second period when Livingston took the lead for good just before the break and held a one-point advantage at halftime.

Tough around the basket, Livingston scored 27 points at the free throw line in a game that saw 50 fouls. LCHS went to the stripe 41 times while Crittenden got 24 chances there.

Crittenden, which had not lost to Livingston Central in nine straight games dating back to 2019, got in a real bind in the third period when senior Travis Champion was injured driving with the ball down the lane in front court. He left with 16 points and never returned.

Sophomore Bryson Walker led CCHS with 27 points and Logan Wring paced the Cardinals with 30 as Livingston improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Rockets will be back in action Tuesday at Webster County (2-0).
