The ring of that squeals like an unpleasant odor for Crittenden County girls’ skipper Shannon Hodge, who is in search of her 400th win. Of course that personal mark is far from her mind as Hodge’s young basketball team – that came out of the chute with six wins in its first nine games – now flirts with mediocrity at .500.
A berth in the seventh-place game in the eight-team BankOne Holiday Bash wasn’t what the coach had expected going into it with a 6-3 worksheet, and two of the first three opponents at South Warren’s holiday hitch hadn’t won more than four games combined.
While the CCHS girls wanted desperately to grant their coach a milestone victory on Friday, it left town on Mr. Peabody’s coal train.
Of course that reference is the famous song by the late John Prine about Muhlenberg County, the team that dispatched CCHS 62-57 in the last pool play game of the tournament.
Crittenden will play Central Hardin – also winless in the holiday event – at 11 a.m., Saturday.
Sophomore Anna Boone continues to score well for the Lady Rockets, netting a career-high 34 against Muhlenberg as her team shot a mere 32 percent from the floor.
The Lady Mustangs (3-8) tried several times to let CCHS get back into the game down the stretch, scoring just two baskets and turning the ball over six times in the last three and a half minutes.
