CCHS girls steal thunder in district DH

MARION, Ky. – One of the largest crowds to ever see a regular-season district doubleheader was on hand Friday night at Rocket Arena, ostensibly to see UK commit Travis Perry and his No. 1 ranked Lyons, but the Lady Rockets stole much of the evening’s thunder.

Crittenden County’s girls came back from a 16-point third-quarter deficit to beat Lyon County 63-56 in a pivotal Fifth District matchup. Lyons boys, led by future Wildcat Travis Perry’s 35 points, beat the Rockets 97-38.

Crittenden County boys’ coach Matt Fraliex said his team played well despite the lopsided loss against the one of the premier teams in Kentucky. Longtime Lady Rocket skipper Shannon Hodge was elated with her team’s second-half effort.

Behind freshman guard Piper Cotham’s 17 first-half points, Lyon’s girls led by 10 at the break and they went on a 6-0 run to start the third period to lead 39-23. From there, CCHS closed the door on Cotham and pinned Lyon down with a frustrating pressing defense that turned the tide in the fourth period.

Sophomore Anna Boone led Crittenden with 24 points and eight rebounds. She scored 17 in the second half. Classmate Elliot Evans scored 17 for CCHS and the bench provided 15 points, mostly from freshman backup center Morgan Stewart. Stewart played much of the last half when starting center Bristyn Rushing left the game with an illness. Stewart finished with a career-high 11 points and four rebounds. 

Crittenden has now beaten Lyon five in a row and 14 of the last 15. The Lady Rockets improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in district play. Meanwhile, Lyon fell to 2-1 in the league and 4-3 overall. 

Perry, whose Lyons feature at least two other college-bound players, didn’t disappoint the crowd that turned out for the show. He scored eight of Lyon’s 14 threes and didn’t play much in the final period during a running clock. 

Perry, whose parents both graduated from Crittenden County High School, has a large extended family in this community. 

Crittenden was slow out of the chute, trailing 22-0 in the first period, but coach Fraliex said his boys maintained their composure and played with great effort. Senior Turner Sharp erased the early goose egg with a three-pointer at the 2:38 mark of the first period, and CCHS trailed 62-22 at the half.

Rocket center Jonah Reddick had 10 points playing against his brother Jack Reddick, a Lyon County guard. Jack finished with 13 for Lyon.

More than 550 tickets were sold for the game, which does not include more than 100 season ticket holders. With around 750 total attendance, school officials say it was perhaps the largest regular-season crowd ever at Rocket Arena.

Crittenden’s boys remain winless six games this season while Lyon improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. CCHS is 0-3 in district games.

Braves sweep CCHS in boy, girl doubleheader

Crittenden fell behind by 14 after almost three quarters Tuesday at Morganfield, but bounced back to tie Union County down the stretch before losing 54-45.

Lady Braves senior Lillian Goodloe nailed seven threes and Union outshot CCHS at the foul to make up the difference. Anna Boone was the only Rocket girl in double figures as Crittenden shot very poorly from the floor and fell to 4-2 on the season.

The Rocket boys fell behind early and never made it close Tuesday at Union County as the CCHS dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 66-46 loss.

Crittenden continues to limp along without its leading scorer Travis Champion, who was hurt a week and a half ago in the game at Livingston Central. He's scheduled for an MRI on his knee and it's unclear when he might return to the court. 

Senior Turner Sharp led CCHS with 15 points and sophomore Bryson Walker scored a dozen at Union County.

CCHS beats Mayfield to go 4-1 on season

PADUCAH, Ky. – Crittenden County used strong defense and improved shooting to turn back Mayfield 50-37 in the McCracken County Holiday Hoopla Saturday.

Anna Boone was named Player of the Game after scoring 18 points. 

Boone fueled a second-quarter run that saw the Lady Rockets take command of the tempo and scoreboard after some cool shooting in the beginning. The sophomore guard poured in eight points during an 11-2 run that gave CCHS a double-digit lead at halftime. 

Foul trouble kept Lady Rocket center Bristyn Rushing and guard Elliot Evans on the bench for a periods during the game. However, Crittenden was able to maintain its lead most of the second half. Mayfield cut it to four at one point in the fourth period, but Crittenden stepped on the accelerator down the stretch to win going away.

Evans and Jordyn Hodge scored 10 apiece for CCHS, which improved to 4-1 on the season. 

Mayfield (2-1) was ranked No. 5 in a First Region preseason poll while CCHS was No. 7 in the Second Region.

Crittenden splits district doubleheader with Trigg

MARION, Ky. – Despite a difficult night shooting the ball, Crittenden County beat Trigg County 56-31 Friday to even its record to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in Fifth District play.

Six first-period Crittenden turnovers allowed the Lady Wildcats (2-2) to stay close for a time. Trigg was within two points with 4:20 to go in the first half, but CCHS began to pull way just before intermission and led 39-25 at the break.

Sophomore Elliot Evans led the Rocket girls with 15 points and classmate Anna Boone had 14 despite some foul trouble that kept her off the floor for a good part of the second period.

BOYS FALL BEHIND LATE

Close for more than three quarters, Trigg County pulled away late against Crittenden County when the game sped up and the Wildcats won going away 66-50.

Playing without leading scorer Travis Champion – who remains out with a knee injury – the Rockets used a zone defense to befuddle Trigg much of the way. Crittenden led by three, 29-26, with six minutes to go in the third following two buckets by senior Turner Sharp. 

From there, the Wildcats turned up the pace and pulled ahead late in the third and then went up by nine in the fourth period on a Jayden Vaughn jump shot from the wing. It was the largest lead for either team to that point.

Without Champion, Crittenden was unable to muster enough offense down the stretch to close the gap and Trigg won for the first time in four games. Meanwhile, the Rockets fell for the fourth straight time this season.

Sophomore Bryson Walker led Crittenden with 20 points. He was the only Rocket in double figures.

Crittenden had defeated Trigg nine of the previous 13 meetings.

CCHS swept at Livingston for first time since 2018

Anna Boone scored a team-high 18 points.

SMITHLAND, Ky. – Not since January of 2018 had Crittenden County been swept at Smithland, but on Friday the Lady Rockets and Rockets were both taken to the mat in a Fifth District doubleheader at Livingston Central.

The Rocket girls took Livingston to overtime before bowing 52-49 as the Lady Cardinals snapped a 17-game losing streak against CCHS.

Livingston missed 9 of its 12 foul shots in the overtime, but still managed to hang on to win as the Lady Rocket offense sputtered down the stretch and turned the ball over far too many times. 

“We had a chance to win the game in regulation,” Crittenden coach Shannon Hodge said. “Our offense was just stagnant and we were very insecure with the ball.”

Anna Boone, who fouled out in overtime, led the Lady Rockets with 18 points and eighth-grader Jordyn Hodge came off the bench to score a dozen. Otherwise, there wasn’t too much cooking on that end of the floor. Meanwhile, Livingston junior Victoria Joiner scored a game-high 20.

CCHS led by five at the half and by four early in the fourth period. 

Crittenden (1-1) gets back to action at Caldwell County Tuesday. Livingston improved to 1-1 on the season.

Bryson Walker scored a team-high 27 for CCHS.

The boys also jumped out to a lead then stumbled in the second half. Their unraveling actually began late in the second period when Livingston took the lead for good just before the break and held a one-point advantage at halftime. 

Tough around the basket, Livingston scored 27 points at the free throw line in a game that saw 50 fouls. LCHS went to the stripe 41 times while Crittenden got 24 chances there.

Crittenden, which had not lost to Livingston Central in nine straight games dating back to 2019, got in a real bind in the third period when senior Travis Champion was injured driving with the ball down the lane in front court. He left with 16 points and never returned. 

Sophomore Bryson Walker led CCHS with 27 points and Logan Wring paced the Cardinals with 30 as Livingston improved to 2-0 on the season. 

The Rockets will be back in action Tuesday at Webster County (2-0).
