Shots don't fall, girls settle for 2nd

Lady Rockets finish second in the eight-team tournament at Bowling Green.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Incredibly poor shooting left the Lady Rockets helpless against Owensboro in Sunday night’s championship game of the FirstBank Holiday Bash at South Warren High School.
Crittenden fell behind in the third period and could never recover in the 58-32 loss.
Owensboro’s quickness on defense created problems for the Lady Rockets, who could not get open on the perimeter and shot poorly in the paint.
The Lady Rockets did not have a three-point field goal in the game, something that hasn’t happened in more than a year. Crittenden made just eight fielders and shot 61 percent at the charity stripe.

The Lady Rocket’s leading scorer, Anna Boone, was injured in the second period and returned to the game with a taped wrist that clearly hampered her ability to shoot. She left the game for good with 6 minutes remaining after Crittenden was trailing by more than 20. She still managed to lead the team with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Rockets finished pool play 2-1, and Owensboro won all four of its games in the tournament to claim the championship.

Crittenden is 8-3 overall and will be back in action Friday, Jan. 3 against Webster at home.

Crittenden County will face Owensboro in the title match on Sunday afternoon in the First Bank Holiday Bash at South Warren. The Lady Rockets finished pool play with two wins and one loss. Owensboro is 3-0 in the tournament.

Freshman Jordyn Hodge scored a career-high 29 points, all in the first three quarters. By the fourth period, Crittenden County was in full control and cleared its bench. Juniors Elliot Evans and Anna Boone contributed 15 and 12 points, respectively.

Ironically, South Oldham had defeated Walton-Verona earlier in the tournament—the only team to beat Crittenden County, which is 8-2 overall this season.

Hodge connected on 12 field goals, including eight points in the first quarter and 13 in the second. She added one three-pointer and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. Freshman Adri Berry, who has seen increased playing time recently, scored her first varsity points, finishing with four.

PRINCETON, Ky. – Battling through sickness and injuries, Crittenden County faced a tough challenge in their matchup against South Panola, Miss., at the West Kentucky Hoops Classic, ultimately falling 69-36. The tournament was held at Caldwell County High School.

The Rockets struggled to generate consistent offense, scoring just four points in three of the game’s four
quarters. A remarkable third-quarter saw the team put up 24 points, offering a glimpse of fire, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap against a dominant South Panola squad. By the end of the third quarter, the Rockets trailed 67-32, leaving little room for a comeback.

Missing from the lineup were two key players: leading scorer CamRon Belcher and center Chase Conyer, both sidelined due to injury or illness. In their absence, freshman Drake Young stepped up and led the Rockets with 12 points, sinking four three-pointers.

South Panola, hailing from Batesville in northern Mississippi, controlled the game with a balanced offensive attack. Their efficiency from the field and depth on the roster proved too much for the shorthanded Rockets. Still, Crittenden managed to shoot the ball well enough, just couldn't get up enough chances. From the floor, the Rockets shot 56 percent in the second half, and 42 percent for the game.

Walton-Verona chills CCHS with threes

Abigail Champion looks to pass.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Despite being outgunned in depth and size, Crittenden County put up a spirited fight in an 80-65 loss to a talented Walton-Verona squad on Saturday during the First Bank Holiday Bash at South Warren.

Morgan Stewart (4) scored
11 in the first period
Morgan Stewart, stepping in as Crittenden’s starting center for the third consecutive game due to Bristyn Rushing's injury, dominated early, scoring 11 of the game’s first 13 points to give the Lady Rockets a quick lead. However, Walton-Verona’s sharpshooting guards and 6-foot-2 center Braylin Terrell, a Grace College (Ind.) commit, took control before halftime with a commanding 21-7 run.

Crittenden County found themselves trailing by as many as 19 points in the third quarter but mounted a comeback midway through the fourth. Eight quick points by Elliot Evans, combined with timely free throws from Anna Boone, narrowed Walton-Verona’s lead to just seven.

Unfortunately for the Lady Rockets, every time they built momentum, the Lady Bearcats countered with clutch three-pointers to snuff out the rally.

Boone and Stewart led Crittenden with 18 points each, while Evans contributed 15.

This marks only the third time in the past 16 seasons that Crittenden County has allowed 80 or more points, all against teams from outside the Second Region.

Walton-Verona, last year’s Eighth Region All "A" champion and a small-school state quarterfinalist, showcased their depth and athleticism throughout the game. Their 10 three-pointers proved critical, coming at key moments to fend off Crittenden’s determined effort.

Crittenden County 19 28 47 65
Walton-Verona 18 39 59 80
CRITTENDEN – Boone 18, Evans 15, Hodge 8, Stewart 18, Champion 2, Federico 4, Berry, Holeman. 3-pointers 3 (Hodge 2, Evans). FT 26-33.
WALTON-VERONA – Christy 26, Logue 28, Fuller 10, Hargett 7, Terrell 6, Drydon 3, Vonhandorf. 3-pointers 10. FT 18-25.

Lady Rockets beat Bash host Spartans

Jordyn Hodge at the foul in the fourth period

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In a closely played contest Friday afternoon at the South Warren First Bank Bash, Crittenden County's girls' basketball team erased a six-point deficit to edge out the tournament hosts 63-59.

The Lady Spartans, arguably one of the state’s most competitive winless teams, took a four-point lead into halftime. Their defensive maneuvering successfully limited Lady Rockets' star scorer Anna Boone in the second period, while South Warren shot well from beyond the arc.

In the third quarter, Boone found her rhythm, scoring 9 of her game-high 24 points to keep the game close. The turning point came in the fourth quarter, with Jordyn Hodge stepping up to deliver 10 crucial points, including five free throws in the final two minutes. Hodge’s performance helped Crittenden County secure the lead for good with 5:45 remaining when she stole a pass and went to the other end of the floor for a basket.

The Lady Rockets improved to 7-1 on the season, while the Lady Spartans dropped to 0-7 against a tough early-season schedule around the Bowling Green area. South Warren's lineup was much larger physically, than CCHS and it had a deeper bench.

Crittenden County will take on Walton-Verona (7-2) from Northern Kentucky at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a matchup against South Oldham (4-3) at 3:30 p.m.

CCHS led by three at the end of the first period, then Lyon outscored CCHS the rest of the way 60-26.

Lyon's press created some problems for the Lady Rockets, who made uncharacteristic turnovers and shot poorly missing several shots in the paint and making just one three-pointer in the game. Andrea Federico made that trey to start the game.

Lyon sophomore Piper Cotham, who scored her 1,000th career point in the game, netted 33. Anna Boone led CCHS with 17.

Crittenden is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Fifth District. The Lyon girls are 7-1 overall an 3-0 in the district.

PADUCAH,  Ky. – Crittenden County's struggles continued as the Rockets fell to South Fulton, Tenn., 79-37, in the consolation round of the St. Mary Christmas Tournament in Paducah. The Rockets remain winless this season after facing yet another uphill battle, missing key players, including top scorers CamRon Belcher and Brayden Poindexter.

The team had to forego their opening-round game of the tournament due to a lack of healthy players, and their depleted roster showed in Saturday’s matchup. Crittenden trailed 20-3 after the first quarter and never recovered.

For Crittenden, Coby LaRue led the scoring with 11 points, including two three-pointers, while Drake Young added 8 points with two treys of his own.
